Birds and Branches Pitcher

Birds and Branches Pitcher

35.00

Created for export in Japan from the 1940s, this dishware tells a pretty interesting story. Lusterware is made by mixing metal oxide into a clear top glaze, producing an iridescent effect. Satsuma ceramics come specifically from the Satsuma region of Japan in what is modern-day Kyushu. Satsuma was originally done in very plain decorations but the Japanese soon realized that more ornately decorated pieces were popular with Western tourists and exporters. This 1940s hand painted pitcher is mostly a lavender purple, highlighted with gold trim. - Matches the larger "Birds and Branches Lusterware Plate".
